The Durban Art Gallery has a rich collection of works from all parts of the world but its strength is in its South African section which is seldom seen in a wide historical scope. This has now changed! An exhibition of works ranging from old established artists such as Pierneef, Maggie Laubser, Irma Stern are on view alongside the younger generation of real hot property artists such as Zwelethu Mthethwa, Walter Oltmann, Peter Schütz, Penny Siopis and others who are challenging their forbearers.

This exhibition is the result of a collaboration with the Department of Education to make works on the curriculum available for learners to view in their original form. The works are arranged in themes and the range of media includes oil paintings, sculptures, ceramics, baskets and beads.

Due to lack of space, which has not increased since the gallery’s move to the City Hall in 1910, it is a rare occasion when works from all these different times can be shown together. Visitors to the many changing exhibitions at the Durban Art Gallery often miss their favourites so this will be an ideal opportunity to see some old friends and acquaint yourself with some new ones.

Although the main aim of the exhibition is to provide a resource for learners it is sure to appeal to the wider public. South African art is suddenly becoming hot property in the international arena and this gives the public an opportunity to see why works by artists such as Gerard Sekoto are achieving record sales on auction.

The gallery is open seven days a week and it would be advisable for large groups to make a booking before their visit. The exhibition is on view for a long term and certain works will be rotated.
