NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is hosting a Retrospective Exhibition of the works of the late Durban-based ceramic artist Maggie Mikula opening August 14 at 17h00 . Born in 1941 and having died in 1989, Maggie Mikula was known for her exquisitely crafted small-scale ceramic works, and was one of the first of her generation of artists to draw extensively from local indigenous cultures, often incorporating mixed media elements such as weaving and beadwork in her work. She was the recipient of several regional and national awards, and her work was collected by many public and private galleries. The exhibition is curated by Vee Bauer, in partial fulfillment of her MAFA thesis on Mikula. A book on Mikula’s life and work, entitled Maggie Mikula, From Clay: A Retrospective edited by Max Mikula, will be launched at the exhibition opening. The exhibition runs until September 19. The Tatham Art Gallery is situated in Commercial Road, Pietermaritzburg. Contact 033 342-1804.
