Good news for jazz lovers is that the Zulu Jazz Lounge at the Playhouse is up and running again with a full-on programme for August. August 8: Natalie Rungan CD launch. August 9: Mlungisi Gegena. Jazz aficionados across the country have been sitting up and listening to the sounds of Mlungisi Gegana’s bass guitar for years- and now, finally his debut album has arrived. August 15: Beatroute. Beatroute is front man and founder Daniel Sheldon on trumpet, Logan Byrne on DblBass, Tony Muirhead on drums and Gerald Sloane (an icon of jazz) on guitar. Formed two years ago around their regular gig at manna (now Market) on Marriot Road just up from the racecourse where they still find perform every Friday lunchtime from 12h30 to 14h30, playing a sassy eclectic mix from a vast repertoire of swing, latin, afro and groove standards and originals in the jazz idiom. Besides the regular Friday lunch session at Market, Beatroute is becoming popular around the Durban social scene and can be found at Society on Florida Road every Friday night from 21h00 to 23h00 followed by swing and salsa dj. They also perform at various fairs, weddings, functions and events, corporate and other. August 22: Busi Mhlongo. Originally from Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal, Busi Mhlongo is a virtuoso singer, dancer and composer whose music defies categorisation. She draws on various South African styles such as mbaqanga, maskanda, marabi and traditional Zulu, fused with contemporary elements from jazz, funk, rock, gospel August 23: Afro Soul CD Launch August 30: Mimi Ntenjwa The Zulu Jazz Lounge is situated in The Playhouse complex.
