NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The BAT Centre’s Democratic Gallery hosts an exhibition of percussion instruments, mostly hand-made drums. This is the second exhibition in the annual series, Percussion As Art which forms part of the Durban Drum Beat (DDB) festival. The exhibition showcases drums and percussion as hand-crafted by Durban drum enthusiasts. This year there will be works on show by the students of FODO Empowerment Art Project situated at the BAT Centre. Drum crafter, Michael Shenani will display some of his creations. Drum student Roleyn Tee will also have his work on display. For a limited period, the drum sculptures of Keith Roderick will be on show. Poems on the theme “drum & communication” will also be on display around the BAT Centre. The exhibition closes on September 18.
