NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. For a chilly July evening music lovers in Pietermaritzburg can enjoy the warmth of an evening of enchanting music, a roaring fire and heartening bowl of soup with Music Revival. Christopher Duigan invites audiences to his home studio to hear a new selection of unusual but appealing classics. “We all know of Chopin’s elegance but what of his rustic compositions inspired by Polish folk themes?,” asks Chris. “How does the music of Mozart’s contemporaries sound? What is the point of an impossibly fast rush of notes in two minutes? Ever hear a Strauss waltz for orchestra played on a piano or music for one hand only? Which French composers besides Ravel and Debussy composed for the piano and what did Beethoven regard as his best composition?” The answers to all this plus some new ideas are explored in a highly appealing presentation on July 21 and 22 at 19h30 and July 23 at 15h30 at 35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone, Pietermaritzburg. The venue open 30 mins before starting time. Tickets R70 include mulled wine and coffee. Stay on with a table of friends for soup and delicious choc brownies - add R50 (Friday and Saturday only). Bookings on 033 342 3051 or email: booking@musicrevival.co.za
