NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. “After a long drought on the corporate sponsorship of concerts front, Martell V O Superior Brandy is assisting us in presenting none other than Busi Mhlongo live on October 9.” This is the good news from Neil Comfort, co-owner of the Rainbow Restaurant & Jazz Club. Busi Mhlongo, who is heading for Holland in November for a four-month stay, will appear live with support act Abahlabekisi ne Thembalethu. Recently the Durban music scene lost maskandi, Spectre Ngwazi, and Mshaks Gasa. ”With Doc Mthalane having passed away in 1997 and M'faz Onyama in 2003, the stark reality is that the guitarists from both Mhlongo's debut release Babhemu (1993) and Urban Zulu (1999) are no longer with us. This concert at the Rainbow will be Mhlongo's way of remembering these fine musicians who have contributed so much to her music over the past decade and half. “For the show, Mhlongo is putting together an almost totally new group. The confirmed line-up so far sees Zoco Dimande from the Mozambican group Mabulu taking up the hot seat as guitarist. Regular bassist Sibusiso Mndaweni is there and will be laying down the rhythm with new drummer Sibongiseni "Chicco" Ndima. Back on keyboards is long time collaborator Susan Barry with Ndodile Shezi and Lihle Ngidi confirmed as two of the backing vocalists. I am still awaiting confirmation on the third backing vocalist, whilst Busi has hinted that there might be a surprise performance from a guest maskandi?” An added bonus comes in the form of new singing sensation Dolly Masango and her seven piece mbhaqanga group Abahlabekisi ne Thembalethu which is the support act. The concert takes place on October 9. Doors open at12h00 noon with the first set commencing at 13h00. Tickets R40 at the door or presale from the Rainbow. There is a limited number of tickets, so early booking is advised. The Rainbow Restaurant & Jazz Club is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. More information on 031 702 9161 or 083 463 8044.
