NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The popular Durban Arts free lunch-hour concerts are up and running again – presented on the City Hall Steps at 12h45 on Wednesdays. The line-up for August is as follows: August 3: Mpumalanga White Birds. This is a youth leadership development project focused on the social upliftment of disadvantaged youths via music and performance in a rural area once torn apart by political violence. The project was established in 1996 and currently has 16 members. They aim to help Isicathamiya music assume its rightful place amongst the many other genres of music in South African cultural life. August 10: Jealous Down. Formed in November, 2001, it is led by Thokozani Mthethwa and has nine members. They have played at events in many venues such as functions for the Dept of Pensions in Ndwedwe and for the Dept of Health at King Edward Hospital. They have also performed in Kimberley and appeared in the Stable Theatre Music Competition as well as the KwaMashu Hostel Music Festival. August 17: Two 4 Sure. This entertaining musical group from Umlazi Township was formed in 1998 by the three original members, Khonza, Senzo and Reggie, who are accompanied by friends Skhumbuzo (drums) and Khanyi (base guitar). Their style of music is Afro–Pop focusing on love-issues and although they do not have a recording deal at present, their vision is to be one of the best sellers in SA music. August 24: Khombi Ziqubu. A favourite with Music on the Steps audiences, she includes cover-songs as well as her own compositions. and her own songs singer. She also performed in the cabaret circuits. August 31: Mthethwa & Mzwakhe – this is a very new sound, combining Afromusic and Masikandi.
