The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Music School presents a programme of free lunch-hour concerts on the Howard College campus. April 4: UKZN Masters student Filip Kormuth performs a piano recital which includes a selection of Bach Preludes and Fugues, Schumann’s Papillons and a Hungarian Rhapsody by Liszt. April 11: Works by John Simon, South African composer and KZN Philharmonic Orchestra Composer-in-Residence, performs Miniature Woodcut for Piano, Scena for Flute Solo and The Pity of War, three settings of war poems by Wilfred Owen for tenor and piano. April 13: Sensational Sopranos featuring students from UKZN’s Opera School and Choral Academy (OSCA) including Nomveliso Nocuze, Nozuko Teto, Zenneth Cibane, Nonhlanhla Mthimkhulu, Khumbuzile Dhlamini, Nolubabalo Tantsi, Sibongile Magwaza and Thulile Hadebe. Accompanied by Andrew Warburton on the piano. April 18: Led by Sazi Dlamini, Skokiana will perform a programme of progressive African Jazz – “Nanka amapoyisa. Fihla iskokiana!/Here are the police. Hide iskokiana”. April 20: UKZN jazz students strut their stuff! Programme includes a selection of popular jazz standards, some original compositions and loads of improvisation. April 25: UKZN Opera student Bonginkosi Cingani (baritone) accompanied by Andrew Warburton (piano) will present a selection of songs and arias from his recent final BA Music Examination recital. Programme includes excerpts from Schubert’s Die Winterreise/Winter Journey song cycle and Vien, Leonora from La Favorita by Donizetti. As the dates fall on public holidays, there will be no concerts on April 27 and May 2. Concerts are held in Howard College Theatre at 12h15.
