NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Creative Arts project is a prison art project which supports the creative potential of offenders in prisons by encouraging them to explore and express their artistic talents. Essentially it is an expression of art therapy wherein sentenced offenders use their individual creative talents to express emotions and feelings towards their own rehabilitation as well as for their enjoyment. Offenders are encouraged to participate in working with art and crafts in a medium of their choice. The competition is open to all prisoners throughout KZN and provides an opportunity to display individual creative and artistic talent, with prizewinning entries being exhibited to the general public. Entrants also have the opportunity to win prizes and sell their work on the open market. In KZN, this project provides an effective public-private partnership between NICRO KZN and the KZN Department of Correctional Services. The Creative Arts In Prison Awards 2002 will be held on September 28 at 12h00 in The Newmarket Room of the Golden Horse Hotel & Casino in Pietermaritzburg.
