NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Students of the department of art and technology at the Ningizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped have been working hard since the attacks on the USA of September 11 to complete a Statue of Liberty beaded sculpture to show solidarity with the people of New York after their tragic losses and devastation. “The youngsters are very proud of their work,” says Ningizimu’s art teacher Robin Opperman. “The US Consul has bought the piece and will be freighting it to the States, where it will find a permanent home. Noxolo Nomvete, the pupil who did the beading and sewing, has been paid for her work as part of our income generation projects and is as pleased as punch about that!” More information from Robin Opperman on 031 305-3408, fax 031 305-6090 or 082 661-3720.
