NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Three engaging young men are currently offering their programme of short comedy sketches at Kwasuka Theatre until Saturday (December 15). Combining themselves under the intriguing name of The Tri-partite Defiance, Joe Carroll, Ivan Boniaszczuk (another name to conjure with) and Ashwin Singh have pooled their resources for The Rainbow Indignation. All stand-up comics, they decided to branch out and try their own, more structured, material on audiences. So far the exercise has been pronounced a great success with plans next year to bring East Coast Radio on board. It’s a show well suited to Kwasuka – all three have good projection and the venue’s acoustics are excellent so microphones are only needed occasionally for effect. Describing themselves as “a white, able-bodied, previously advantaged, heterosexual, catholic male (Ivan Boniaszczuk);”a white previously disadvantaged.. “ short …. no, sorry, vertically challenged … “Irish atheist (Joe Carroll) and a lawyer (Ashwin Singh) they’re correct in asserting that they’re a joke before they even start! Their material is all original and takes the mickey out of anyone and anything from politicians to farm take-overs. The going can be audacious, biting and outrageous but it never becomes ugly. For those sensitive to the kind of explicit language used by many comedians, Rainbow Indignation keeps this down to a bare minimum. This can only be good news. I believe that if comedy material raises laughs without undue embellishment, then it will stand the test of time. Book at Computicket or the theatre on 031 309-2236. – Caroline Smart
