NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Last month, 25 children from Amaoti Disabled People’s Association (ADPA) presented an evening of traditional and modern dance, drama, music and art for the very first time. Joanne Deverson, volunteer fundraiser at ADPA , said, “The disabled children rarely have the opportunity to even go out of Amaoti and so to perform at the Durban Art Gallery was a very special occasion and major achievement for them. The performances were even more remarkable considering the poor conditions and very limited resources that the disabled people and staff work and rehearse in. The evening was ADPA’s opportunity to thank all those who have supported us. We also hope that it will have encouraged local organisations, companies and government departments to give us the support and funding urgently required for ADPA to continue its services.” ADPA works towards the rehabilitation and integration into the community of those with disabilities. Services include a day centre for 40 disabled children and a community based rehabilitation programme reaching 70 local disabled people and their families. More details from Joanne Deverson on phone/fax (031) 519-2510 or 083 311-8365.
