The merger between the Performing Arts Workers Equity (P.A.W.E) and Musicians Union of South Africa (MUSA) which were formed in 1990 and 1994 respectively as a response to the escalating exploitation of the artists, has resulted in the establishment of a consolidated voice.

This new voice seeks to address the challenges faced by the Creative Workers of South Africa, chief among them being the unavailability of a social security plan, regulation of the industry, focus and lobby for the promulgation of a Performers Protection Act and a host of other challenges currently ravaging the creative arts Industry.

This exercise led to the birth of the Creative Workers Union of South Africa (CWUSA), a new entity in the sector and one of COSATU’s 21 affiliates.

Arts practitioners and the public in general are invited to attend the Provincial Arts Imbizo which will be held on July 19.

Issues to be dealt with include: labour issues in the sector; establishment of a Protection Act for Art Practitioners; Financial and Personal Management; Intellectual Property Rights; CWUSA National Congress taking place from September 7 to 9, and The UNESCO Convention and Cultural Diversity.
