NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. South Africa’s theatre world mourns the passing of Percy Baneshik, one of the country’s finest arts journalists and reviewers and founding Arts Editor of the Star Tonight. Despite a physical disability caused by polio, he was a staunch supporter of live theatre and his small, distinctive frame was always a reassuring – albeit unnerving - sight as seen from the stage, knowing that the performance would be assessed by a reviewer of integrity and perception. In a letter to artzone (http://www.artzone.co.za) theatre producer Des Lindberg as chairman of Theatre Managements of South Africa, described Percy Baneshik as “an institution, a guru, a mentor and a leader.”
