NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Carver College opens its doors in 2006 for it’s first intake of full-time and part-time students. “With the increase in the number of movies being filmed in KZN and generally a renewed focus on Durban as a fresh and viable alternative to Cape Town and Jo’burg for the film and new media industry, we realise there is a growing need for highly skilled graduates in specialist areas such as 3D Animation, Video compositing, special effects and advanced media design,” says Mike McFadyean, Carver College Director. “After consulting industry specialists we realise that there is a skills gap between what graduates are currently leaving media courses with and what the industry demands,” he continues. “We are looking to close this gap by producing graduates with a high level of skill that can feed into the industry immediately.” The full-time media course will consist of three years of study covering every critical aspect of media design such as Graphic Design, DTP, 3D Animation, Video VFX and Advanced Web Design. There will be certificated exit points after each year. The part-time courses will focus on web design and 3D Animation. “It is our intention to make Carver College the premiere media college in Durban and eventually in South Africa. We will be based in Musgrave Towers above Musgrave Centre and our computer and design labs will offer superb equipment and software. This has been a dream of mine for some years now and I am excited at the prospect of running a college that really gives students the right experiences and skills to set them up for the future,” says Mike. More information about Carver College at www.carvercollege.co.za or call Mike McFadyean on 072 599 4118.
