NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Just in time for the school holiday (March 29 to April 7), the Catalina Theatre and Creative Madness is staging a delicious, funky new South African fairy tale. A Froggy Fairy Tale is written and directed by well-known actor Peter Court who also appears in the show alongside two of Durban’s top actresses: Olivia Borgen and Clare Mortimer. This is a new mask and puppet madcap production from Peter Court’s Creative Madness. It will be the first show for children to be staged at the Catalina Theatre and Conference Company. Filled with fun for the whole family this play is bound to delight and enthral as three tattered thespians endeavour to enact the story before expulsion from a disused and derelict theatre. It is interactive storytelling and theatre-of-the-imagination at its best. With the young audience’s help, the forlorn frog Ferdinand will try to persuade the pompous and pampered Princess to help him return to his human form. Having been worried by the wicked and woe-begotten Witch, comforted by the conscientious King and favoured by the frivolous Fairy, Ferdinand the frog sets out to recover his Princely personage. The show runs for one hour – time enough for Mums and Dads to drop off the little ones and explore the stalls and shops to be found at Wilson’s Wharf – or have a light lunch or morning tea at one of the many restaurants and eateries. A Froggy Fairy Tale is staged from March 29 to April 7 at the Catalina Theatre. Performances daily at 10h00 and noon. Tickets R30 (R25 children under 12). Book on 031 305 6889. There are special discounts for bookings of 10 or more and birthday parties etc can be arranged.
