Freebirds is a collaboration between the Dutch based Theatre Company Het Waterhuis and Eager Artists, a Durban based Theatre Company. The musical production emphasises HIV/AIDS awareness among the youth. The show takes place in different areas at the Northern Kwa Zulu Natal from February 14 to March 30

The script has been translated into Zulu and directed by renowned Durban director Jerry Pooe. It involves a cast of 12 performers from Eager Artists. Roel Twijnstra is the artistic leader. He conceptualized Freebirds with Pooe and Kees van Loenen, who wrote the text.

The production ran in Grahamstown, Durban and in Elandsdoorn during June and July 2002. (See review in Festivals)

Eager Artists’s first performance of the 2003 programme of Freebirds takes place at Indwedwe Multi Functional Hall on Valentine's Day, February 14. The production is supported by the Dutch NGO NOVIB. Some of the Freebirds performances will be combined with several grass roots HIV/AIDS prevention projects in Kwa Zulu Natal.

In June 2003 the original combined cast of actors, dancers, tutors and musicians from South Africa - Eager Artists, Pretoria Tech and The Netherlands - Het Waterhuis and Theatre school HKA from Amsterdam will present Freebirds in The Netherlands with shows in both Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The show will be performed for schools and the general public in halls at different areas in the Northern KZN at no charge.
