NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Great Outdoors, Neil McCarthy’s watershed contemporary drama about four ordinary suburbanites with an interesting dilemma, was first premiered at the Standard Bank Grahamstown Festival in July 2000. The challenging and edgy drama is being re-cast and re-directed for a Durban season by thespian visionary Maurice Podbrey who bought the award-winning Copenhagen (FNB Vita Best Play 2001) to South Africa. In the words of Star Tonight’s Garalt Macliam: ”It’s an engaging work which examines the tenuous nature of relationships, even those of the closest kind, as well as examining the meaning of life and the nature of perception. And it does all of this in about 70 minutes with an intellectual sophistication that is most stimulating. “ The Great Outdoors will run from April 10 to May 11 in the Square Space Theatre at the University of Natal campus.
