FINDLAY & WAFER AT AARDKLOP (article first published : 2002-09-24)

The Aardklop National Arts Festival's visual arts programme this year is not only the biggest in its five-year history, but for the first time festival-goers will also have the opportunity to go on guided art tours.

A first for Aardklop is the FNB Vita Art Prize, which is being brought to Potchefstroom by First National Bank. This important art competition is based loosely on the Turner Prize in London, with the emphasis on a contemporary idiom and a reflection of contemporary trends.

Alan Alborough is this year's winner with his installation Split decision. The focus of this work is on the concept and the manipulation of space and words that have a direct impact on the viewer. The interaction between the space and the words involves the viewer and also emphasises choice - personal and otherwise.

The other participants include Durban artist Bronwen Findlay, who created Threads with Diana Mabunda and Faiza Galdhari, Abrie Fourie with Filippense 4:8, and Usha Seejarim and Jeremy Wafer, who is also from Durban.

Kevin Brand is Aardklop's invited festival artist this year. He is one of South Africa’s leading artists in the field of "public art" - work which is exposed to a broader community and often in a public place such as a park. Features of Brand's work are his use of non-traditional sculpting material and the serious social comment it makes on South Africa's life and history.

Aardklop runs from September 24 to 28 in Potchefstroom. Bookings is at Computicket. Accommodation queries on 018 294-7508 or visit the Web site at www.aardklop.co.za for general information.
