UNITED CANVAS (article first published : 2002-09-15)

The Unity Canvas Project is an artist-to-artist, New York based collective response to the tragedy of September 11th. Almost 300 artists from around the world unveiled their collaborative art project Unity Canvas on September 7 at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in the United States.

Artists who contributed to Unity Canvas submitted 12-inch squares of unstretched canvas about 9/11 (as it has become known) and the times we live in. Artists used a variety of media, including paint, digital and embroidery, to capture their responses to 9/11.

Unity Canvas was started one month after 9/11 by a group of artists mostly based in Manhattan. It has received fiscal sponsorship from the New York foundation for the Arts. Artists from every region of the United States and countries all over the world have contributed and some of the countries represented include Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa and Spain.

One of the artists participating is Shirley Howells from Pinetown who submitted two pieces, one a street scene showing the unity of the New Yorkers, with the burning towers as a backdrop and the other a portrait of a woman clearly showing all the horror, anguish, terror and disbelief experienced by all in response to the event.

Shirley exhibits in galleries all over South Africa and her canvases show the vibrancy, passion and colour of Africa She will be going over to the US again in December to deliver work for the opening exhibition of Moore's Gallery Inc which has now relocated to Atlanta from Detroit.
