SASOL NEW SIGNATURES (article first published : 2002-09-6)

Sasol, in conjunction with the Association of Arts Pretoria, is pleased to announce the winners of the Sasol New Signatures competition 2002.

Sasol’s mission for this year’s competition is to support dynamic young artists and the exposition of exciting new art. Pieter Cox, chief executive of Sasol says: “Sasol is known for its involvement in the visual and performing arts and believes that the arts form one of the biggest platforms of expression that allows ideas to be freely exchanged and builds bridges between people and communities”.

Now in its 13th year, the competition is one of the biggest of its kind in the South Africa and focuses on unknown young South African artists older than 18 years who have not yet held a solo exhibition of their work.

The Sasol New Signatures Competition serves as a public stage for new experimental and conceptual art. The standard is exceptionally high and although hundreds of works are received, only about 100 carefully selected works are exhibited and form part of the competition. The viewing public is presented with an exhibition of excellence and a new selection committee is appointed annually to ensure that the evaluation of the works stay fresh.

One overall art piece is chosen by the selection committee as the winning work. Two appointed "judges" each individually selects a work of their choice which serves as runner-up prizes. (or equal second prizes). The People’s Choice prize involves an artwork selected by the viewing public during the exhibition. The prize money is R22,000.

The winners of Sasol New Signatures 2002 were Theodore Ludwig Botha and Willem Botha. An exhibition of last year’s Sasol New Signatures winners will run concurrently at the Pretoria Art Museum until September 7.
