FRED ARCHIBONG (article first published : 2002-08-20)

Running in the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mchunu Gallery from September 6 to 30 is an exhibition by Nigerian artist Fred Archibong titled Art as a bedrock for future development.

Nationally and internationally recognised, Fred Archibong is incontrovertibly one of Nigeria's brightest artists. Over the last 30 years, he has contributed invaluably to Nigeria across Europe and America. The variety of works in this exhibition attest to his versatility which, is shown by his mastery in working with clay, steel, oils, watercolour and mixed media.

Fred Archibong's works reflect his cosmopolitan disposition as a resident of Lagos. They show a passion in working with the various peoples of his Nigeria. His efforts in the works such as Fulani Motifs show his consideration for the folks of Fulani, the natives of Northern Nigeria. The calabash carvers of the Oyo state in South Western Nigeria also appear in his works.

Archibong is currently a Commissioner of the Nigerian Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). In the last few years he has had the opportunity to deploy his talents to the country's tourism sector and through his contributions has been acknowledged as an affiliate of the Worlds Tourism Organisation (WTO).
