VIRGINS (article first published : 2002-06-28)

Setting up camp in the NSA Gallery for a three-week period from July 31 to August 17, artist/filmmaker Aryan Kaganof will present a multimedia collaborative, interactive exhibition, consisting of film screenings, discussions, performances and ever changing digital artworks.

Kaganof will live (and be on display) in the NSA for the duration of the show with a digital editing suite, allowing the artist to process ‘input’ by visitors to the gallery complex overnight. The results will be presented as printouts, screenings and projections, resulting in a constantly evolving exhibition.

The artist invited Durban based artist/DJ Helge Janssen, artist/filmmaker Catherine Henegan (currently based in Amsterdam) and performance artist Nicola Deane to join the fray. The results of the collaborations and individual works will be presented as part of the exhibition, and included in a programme of three evenings of presentations, music and performance.

Films from Kaganof’s oeuvre will be screened continuously in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, allowing visitors a unique opportunity to witness the work of this renowned filmmaker, including the South African premiere of Western 4.33 (2002), winner of the first prize,12th African Film Festival, Milan.

DVD screenings will be held continuously from 10h00 to 17h00 every day with the programme beginning every hour on the hour.

The official opening of the exhibition on July 30 will feature a screening of Helge Janssen’s Nicola’s First Orgasm, The Seven Last Words Of Jesus Christ and Western 4.33.

On August 10 at 20h02, there will be a poetry reading by Leo Janssen, a sound performance by Nicola Deane and the world premiere performance of The Gospel According to Kaganof featuring Matthew Oats.

The closing party on August 17 at 20h02 will include the world premiere screening of Casbah And Back and a performance by Virgins as well as a fashion show and performance by Helge Janssen who thereafter offers dj til dawn.
