TERRE, TERRE! (article first published : 2002-06-10)

The French Institute of South Africa, Museum Africa and MTN ScienCentre present Terre, Terre! at Museum Africa in Johannesburg until June 19 whereafter it will be displayed in Cape Town during July and August. It then moves to Harare before coming to the MTN ScienCentre in Umhlanga Rocks where it will be on display from November 5 to December 13.

Terre, Terre! (“Earth,Earth!” in French) is an interactive science exhibition with 24 displays developed by La Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in La Villette, Paris, known world-wide for its outstanding science exhibits and innovative teaching ideas. They have worked in conjunction with the environment program of the CNRS - top government scientific research centre in France - and Centre-Sciences - a Science Centre in Orléans - to build a challenging experience to make visitors aware of the role they play in the use and preservation of their earth heritage.

“Air, water, soil” and “life” and are the key themes of this exhibition, which demonstrates how industrial growth and development do not inevitably threaten the environment, but if properly planned can lead to ecological balance. It poses questions such as: How can we best manage the resources available on earth? How many of us will there be in 2100? The exhibits are suitable for all ages from eight years and older.

In this year of the World Summit on Sustainable Development the displays appropriately enough all have a sustainable development theme:

Terre,Terre! has been brought to South Africa by the French Institute of South Africa in collaboration with the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in South Africa and the Regional Co-ordination of French Cultural Centres in Madagascar.
