PPC SCULPTOR AWARDS (article first published : 2002-06-10)

Artists “young” in the art of sculpting are invited to enter the 2002 PPC Young Concrete Sculptors Awards competition. This is the eleventh year the event is being held. Since its inception, the competition has grown from strength to strength in both quality and number of entries received. It is run under the auspices of the Association of Arts Pretoria and is sponsored by PPC Cement.

Concrete must be used as the main material for the sculpture but other materials such as wood, bronze and glass may be incorporated in the work. There is no predetermined “theme” to inhibit artists who are given free rein with the choice of subject matter for their sculptures.

A maximum of three entries per artist may be submitted and a nominal fee of R30 per work is payable to the Association of Arts Pretoria. There are no restraints as to the size of the sculptures, which will be exhibited both inside the gallery and outdoors in the PPC Cement Sculpture Garden at the Association of Arts Pretoria. Artists are responsible for transporting their works to and from the premises of the Association of Arts.

This year prizes are being awarded in two categories - Best Sculpture on Exhibition and Technical Excellence in Concrete Sculpture, with the winners being awarded R10,000 each and R5,000 to the runner up in each category, bringing the total prize money to R30,000. One artist can in fact win first prize in both categories if his/her work fulfills all the judging criteria for both best sculpture and technical excellence in concrete sculpture.

Works must be submitted to the Association of Arts Pretoria on either September 20, 21 or 25, 2002. The official opening of the exhibition and prize-giving ceremony will be held on September 30 and the exhibition of works entered will continue until October 10.

Beth Harris of PPC Cement said, “The entries we received last year were most imaginative and of a high standard. We hope that this trend will continue and look forward to receiving this year’s entries. Previous winners have gone on to successful careers in sculpting, and this is truly encouraging both for PPC Cement, as the sponsors, and for aspiring sculptors.”

Information and entry forms available from Nandi Hilliard at the Association of Arts Pretoria on 012 346-3100 or Beth Harris at PPC on 011 488-1786.
