CHARITY TICKETS FOR HOMETALK (article first published : 2002-06-7)

The City of Durban in association with Themi Venturas Productions, Arnie Field, P4 Radio and Pick 'n Pay will present Hometalk - A South African Celebration! at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from June 22 to July 21.

Hometalk is a new exciting theatre project which pays homage to South Africa’s rich and diverse history of popular music. It will be staged by Themi Venturas and long time collaborator Arnie Field in association with the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre to celebrate the EST’s 21st birthday.

The performance on Wednesday June 19 at 19h30 has been earmarked as a fundraiser for three important charities: Childline, the Kloof/Highway branch of the SPCA and the Heart Foundation. Tickets at a vastly reduced rate of R55 are available through Colin Berkowitz directly on 031 205-6035. All profits made from tickets sold through Colin go directly to the combined charities.

“For so long we have looked abroad for our inspiration to stage musicals but now the time has come to find our inspiration closer to home and celebrate all that is proudly South African,” say the organisers of the show. “Hometalk takes us on a journey back to the heady days of Sophiatown, to the sixties where hippiedom took on a South African flavour, the rocking 70’s and 80’s where Springbok Radio (and Springbok hits) ruled the airwaves at a time when international isolation gave us free reign to create our own distinct sound and heroes. The show takes us up to the significant 90’s where music was an integral part of celebrating our freedom. No cultural grouping or music style is left untouched - ensuring that all South Africans will groove together.”

Hometalk is presented by Themi Venturas Productions, Arnie Field, P4 Radio and Pick 'n Pay. It is conceived by Themi Venturas and Arnie Field who both appear in the show. They are joined on stage by Nothando Mbanda and Karen Campbell-Gillies. Choreography is by Thulebona Mzizi with musical arrangements by Dawn Selby.

The production opens on June 22 - the exact date that the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre opened 21 years ago. Performances are Tuesdays to Saturdays at 19h30 and Sundays at 18h00. Book at Computicket or phone 011 340-8000 or visit www.computicket.com. Durban Computicket outlets can be found Musgrave Centre, Pavilion, Gateway, La Lucia Mall, The Workshop, Game City, Workshop, Greyhound beach office and the Playhouse Theatre.
