ARTROOTS AT KWA SHUKELA (article first published : 2002-02-23)

The well-known art and craft outlet Artroots is holding an exhibition called Traditions at the Kwa Shukela Community Gallery at Kwa Shukela Conference Centre, located in the grounds of the SA Sugar Association at Mount Edgecombe.

On display are tribal artefacts from various parts of KZN as well as an array of Mudcloths and Mossie cloth from West Africa. These provide a good setting for the work of Zimbabwean artist Hugh Mbayiwa, whose colourful works reflects the rural traditions of Southern Africa. Well-known in his own country, Hugh’s work is becoming increasingly popular in South Africa and other parts of the world.

“This outstanding exhibition in a wonderful setting in the midst of the canefields is well worth a visit,” says Artroots’ owner Monica Richards. “We have been invited to exhibit on a regular basis at this venue, so look forward to a kaleidoscope of artworks, both contemporary and traditional, being exhibited over the year.”

Traditions runs until March 8.

Artroots, presently located at 50 Florida Road, will soon be opening an Online Gallery Shop at www.artroots.co.za which should be operational in March. More details from Monica Richards on 031 207-8939 or e-mail: artroots@ global.co.za
