FROM PLACE TO PLACE (article first published : 2002-02-23)

French artist Anne Beaufort and South African choreographer Ntombi Gasa from the Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre Company have worked together on From Place to Place, an exhibition of contemporary art and dance collaboration.

This marks the second phase of the international artistic project Movements and Territories presented in Durban and aimed at creating a dialogue between visual art and contemporary dance. Anne exhibited the first phase of Movements and Territories at the NSA Gallery in the year 2000 when she collaborated with choreographer Lliane Loots.

From Place to Place opens on March 6 at 18h00 at the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mcunu Gallery.

In conjunction with the opening, a performance titled Out and About choreographed by Ntombi Gasa will take place on March 6 and 8 in the BAT Hall. Also performed will be two other pieces initially presented at the 2001 JOMBA! dance festival:Ngila (I am here), also choreographed by Ntombi, and Locked up choreographed by Neliswa Reshualang from Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre Company in collaboration with Anne De Beaufort.

Anne Beaufort's painting tell about shifts, from a place to another and from a movement to another. Her work refers to automatic writing and is directly inspired from shapes and movements of dancers and mainly made on site with the performers. She also translates into painting rhythms of music discovered in South Africa. The movements are interpreted on paper or transparent sheets which, when hung, become a series of two sided paintings telling a whole story.

Ntombi Gasa is one of the original founder members of Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre Company and has been awarded the FNB Vita performance Award for most outstanding up-and-coming female dancer. She has already choreographed Soul at the Playhouse Theatre in 1999 as well as two different versions of Ngila for the New Moves section of JOMBA! in 2000 and 2001.

The project is supported by both AFAA; the French Association for Artistic Action and the Grenoble City Council, Anne's de Beaufort's home city in France.
