VACANCY AT GERTRUDE POSEL GALLERY (article first published : 2002-02-15)

The Gertrude Posel Gallery is the University of the Witwatersrand's flagship institution for the collection, curation and exhibition of a wide range of objects, including paintings, photographs, sculpture, and items making up one of the most important collection of African art in the country.

The collection is valued at several million rand and is of international significance. The Gallery is used for teaching and research purposes and is open throughout the year to members of the public, as well as the University community. The head of the gallery has retired and applications for the position are invited.

Applicants should have at least a Master's degree, relevant research experience, and a proven track record in the management of African or contemporary art collections, curation of international exhibitions, or general museum administration at a senior level. In addition to managing a staff of four, applicants will be expected to be computer literate at all levels, with some experience with multi media.

Financial and fund raising skills are essential. Strong organisation skills and an ability to communicate clearly with a wide range of people, from school children to corporate funders and from undergraduate students to professional staff, are required.

Duties include hands-on daily management of the Gallery and its staff, including taking decisions on the staging of exhibitions, appropriate curatorial and storage procedures, acquisition of new items, policies on artworks and loans, fund raising, financial management, liaison with appropriate professional organisations, marketing and promoting the collection and training of staff and students.
