DBD AT AMAGUGU (article first published : 2002-02-11)

The well-known isicathamiya group Durban Black Drifters will entertain guests at the African Art Centre at the opening of their annual Amagugu IV Treasures. The opening will take place on February 19 at 18h00. The exhibition will be opened by Dr Gerry Salole, representative for the Ford Foundation SA.

Durban Black Drifters have appeared in all major festivals and concerts in and around Durban and it is the only group that conducts successful isicathamiya workshops for high schools. This project has been running for seven years and has toured over 700 schools in KZN.

The exhibition comprises rare ear plugs, antique wooden head rests, meat trays, milk pails and other wooden household utensils. There is also some interesting beadwork from 14 areas in KZN including a special display from Cofimvaba as well as Pondo Beer Baskets and some seldom seen bhaca pieces.
