DLINZA NGE AFRICA (article first published : 2002-02-7)

Kenneth Mazibuko is a young self-taught artist from Stanger, North of Durban, who has been painting for some time. His first solo exhibition, Dlinza nge Africa (Think About Africa), will be held at the BAT Centre's Democratic Gallery from February 8 at 18h00 until March 8.

The exhibition focuses on the everyday lives of the African people, their cultures and how important it is to preserve them. One of his paintings is entitled Inhlonipho (Respect) and shows a young bride kneeling before her mother-in-law, the traditional Zulu custom of showing respect to the elderly. Another interesting painting on this exhibition is that of young men drinking home-brew beer - a traditional way of celebrating and enjoying the spirit of togetherness. His artworks range from simple still-life paintings and landscapes to full portrait paintings.

As a person with physical challenges he opted to do art at an early age in order to supplement his income, He did this by painting and selling his artworks in the streets. His talent was spotted by his school-teachers who encouraged him by giving him odd jobs to do around the school such as making the school charts for example.
