BONISA PRIVATE GALLERY (article first published : 2002-02-7)

Bonisa Private Gallery opened in September 2001. Situated in Ronalds Road in Kloof, it is housed in a striking wooden house on stilts with an imposing thatched roof. An indigenous garden with a large pond gives it a special ambiance.

“We particularly want to display contemporary art from southern Africa which has something special - a great deal is from artists of KZN,” says the inspiration behind the Gallery, Liesel Wright.

The collection shows paintings from David Oosthuizen, Hillary Graham who recently moved to Durban, George Msimang and Ben Nsusha whose paintings and sculptures are well known. “We also have works from the versatile Marjorie Jones (daughter of the late sculptor Basil “Buck” Jones) as well as the largest collection of work by the late Thomas Matthews.”

“The products by John Mills are art works from indigenous wood. There is pottery from famous artists like Andrew Walford, Annie Nicholson and David Walters. Carl Roberts’ sculptures from driftwood are outstanding. There is rich talent in our midst,” Liesel adds.

Bonisa is a private gallery and has open days for the public every first Sunday of the month from 10h00 to 16h00. Otherwise visits are by appointment. Or phone 031 764-0288 or fax 031 764-0266 or e-mail: bonisa47@mweb.co.za
