DAVID LLOYD (article first published : 2002-01-23)

From February 5 to 25, the NSA Galleries will host an exhibition of Dear Diary, paintings by David Lloyd.

David Lloyd has been living and working in Durban since 1975. A self-taught artist with no formal art training, he exhibited for the first time in 1979 during an NSA New Signatures exhibition. He received third prize and since then has had no other exposure, and is thus considered a young artist. This is his first solo exhibition.

Quoting Nash, Hopper and Bacon as references and points of inspiration, David Lloyd’s works are seemingly whimsical and naïve. The strange and awkward seems only so because it has been taken out of its context, and the artist lets the commonplace be seen in isolation – allowing it to become significant and important.

The paintings are visual notations of lived experiences, ranging from the odd and scary to the funny and sublime. There are no hidden agendas – the works are what they seem, refreshingly devoid of overt political or social content. Utilising oil on board, his preoccupation with the urban jungle is strongly evident, and his subject matter the sights and sites of Durban – seen through a car speeding past or imagined during a daydream.
