AIDAN WALSH RETROSPECTIVE (article first published : 1999-08-10)

Well-known Durban artist Aidan Walsh is to have a retrospective exhibition at the NSA Gallery from September 19 to October 14.

“I feel greatly honoured to be awarded this exhibition by the NSA,” says Aidan, founder and owner of one of Durban’s former top arts outlets, the highly successful Walsh Marais Gallery which operated from 1961 to 1979. “It is basically an honour for the amount of work I have done for the arts from the days of the Walsh Marais Gallery where - aside from featuring well-known and prominent artists Walter Battiss, Cecily Sash, Patrick O’Connor and Andrew Verster - I made a point of showing unknowns who have now made it to the top. These artists include Bronwen Findlay, Terry King, Malcolm Christian, Paul Stopforth and others.”

From 1979 to 1987, Aidan worked as curator at the NSA before starting as a full-time painter in 1987. He has exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout the country and has had both public and private commissions. Among the public commissions are portraits of President Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. His retrospective exhibition is scheduled to travel to the main centres in South Africa.
