HUGH MBAYIWA (article first published : 2001-12-17)

Artroots are exhibiting the works of a selection of the top black artists mainly from KZN during December 2001, as well as the colourful work of visiting Zimbabwe artist Hugh Mbayiwa. His work is new to South Africa although he has exhibited quite extensively in Zimbabwe.

What impressed Artroots Gallery director Monica Richards is his work as a voluntary art teacher at his old school. This exhibition of his artworks is to help him raise funds to purchase brushes and paints for his young students for the next school year, as these materials are non existent in Zimbabwe at present.

Artroots also presents a kaleidoscope of colour, including Christmas tree decorations and small gifts, as well as cards, decor items, and very original artefacts by the top local craftspeople. They also have the best selection of unusual and original African crafts from around Africa for overseas visitors and African decor fundis.
