HIV/AIDS BILLBOARDS/PRINTS (article first published : 2001-12-2)

Just opened at the Durban Art Gallery to run until January 1, 2002, is an exhibition titled HIV/AIDSBillboards/Prints.

The Artists for Human Rights Trust Projects Committee has launched a National Billboard initiative, promoting an anti HIV/AIDS message. Some 31 artists representing South Africa, other African countries, and those outside the African continent have contributed their work towards this campaign. Three billboards, using works contributed by the artists, have been placed in communities around Durban. Sponsors include the KZN Department of Health, the MTN Art Institute, and Shepstone and Wylie Attorneys.

The aims and objectives for this project are to use visual art as a medium to initiate a national campaign to intensify the awareness of HIV/AIDS and more importantly to break the stigma surrounding this disease. The Billboard initiative involves the use of Fine Arts print images produced by local and international artists to promote the slogan Break the Silence.
