THOMAS BAINES E-BOOK (article first published : 2001-11-22)

An electronic publication titled Thomas Baines and the Great Map: Routes of the Goldfields Exploration Company's Expedition 1869-1872 forms CD-ROM No 1 of the Campbell Collections electronic publications series.

Well-known artist and explorer Thomas Baines who died in Durban, South Africa, in 1875, made two trips up to modern-day Zimbabwe in search of gold-bearing sites for the Natal Land and Colonisation Company at the time of the Lobengula succession crisis.

One of the large maps which he drew on this trip is the subject of study for an interdisciplinary team co-ordinated by Dr Lindy Stiebel of the University of Durban-Westville’s English Studies. The other team members are Dr Jane Carruthers (History, UNISA), Professor Vivian Forbes (chief cartographer, University of Western Australia), Prof. Norman Etherington (History, University of Western Australia) and the Campbell Collections staff (University of Natal, Durban).

The CD aims to make Baines' manuscript map of 1872, which is owned by the Campbell Collections, more accessible to scholars and the general public. Using cutting edge technology, scholars for the first time will be able to access this map in Perth, London or Johannesburg as well as enjoy the benefit of multi-disciplinary scholarly commentary and illustrations on hand.

Thomas Baines and the Great Map is intended to be the first in a series of CDs produced by Campbell Collections which will showcase significant holdings in this prestigious Africana collection.
