NINGIZIMU WINS AWARD (article first published : 2001-11-10)

Robin Opperman, art teacher of Ningizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped in Montclair recently achieved first place in the National Teaching Awards in the category: Excellence in Special Education. The award was presented by education minister Kadar Asmal and President Thabo Mbeki.

“This is not the reason that we do the work that we do, but it certainly is a stamp of approval for what we have done and a source of inspiration for future efforts,” says a delighted Robin Opperman who was one of nine competitors for the title.

Robin and his pupils have been chosen to represent South Africa in the Malaysian Special Arts Festival in Kuala Lumpur.
