JOURNEY INTO THE LIGHT (article first published : 2001-10-22)

Journey into the Light is an exhibition of oil and watercolour paintings by Durban artist Marié J.Scott-Macnab to take place at the Durban Botanic Gardens NBS Education Centre in Sydenham Road from October 21 to 30. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday 09h00 to 18h30.

The works explore the South African landscape, allegorical still lives and people as spiritual elements within the greater whole. Her approach to art making is intuitive, depicting ordinary scenes and objects as vehicles of the ethereal world. Her creative imagination reveals a position metaphysical force that exudes exhilaration and joy. Light, harmony and wholeness are themes which transcend current social upheaval and are reflected in her work as spiritually charged images of children, dancers, deconstructed landscapes and symbolic objects.

Marié’s dream-like use of perspective and colour portray an inner world of peace and spirit that provides a refreshing glimpse of a paradise lost. Her depictions of gardens evoke a sense of communion with the fruits of the earth that both nourish and inspire.

During the exhibition Marié J.Scott-Macnab plans to host different functions. These include a lecture and workshop on Bushman Art on October 27th October from 10h00 to 16h00 lunch break from 12h00 to 14h00. Presenter will be archaeologist and publisher Beth Wahl. Cost R50. Also planned is a chamber music performance by Christopher Duigan and ensemble, on October 28 at 15h00 or October 29 at 19h30 (programme to be announced). Cost R75.
