BRONZE CASTING WORKSHOP (article first published : 2001-09-21)

Kim Goodwin and Sarah Richards will run a combined bronze casting workshop in the KZN Midlands. "The idea is to give people a chance to experience making a bronze first hand and to bring awareness to the process by demystifying it and to make both sculpture and bronze casting more accessible:, says Sarah Richards. "Both artists and non artists are welcome to attend."

Participants need to bring a wax sculpture to the workshop or a mould so Kim can pour a suitable wax ready for casting. The participants will then have a least two sculptures by the end of the workshop - a large and a small bronze and a cuttlefish cast sculpture.

The workshop will be run over three days at the Goodwin Foundry in the Natal Midlands on October 20 then the following weekend October 27 and 28. Accommodation can be organised.

The cost of the workshop is R960 and includes the price of the bronze, dipping costs, cuttlefish casting and Saturday night dinner. A deposit of R600 is required before October 1.

"Beginners may need extra tuition to prepare suitable wax sculptures so at an additional cost they can join my sculpture classes for a duration that will suit them at R55 per class where I can assist them in all the processes required for the workshop," adds Sarah.

The classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Wednesday mornings. More details on 083 707-0126.
