TALK ON IMPERIAL GHETTO (article first published : 2001-09-8)

Friends of the Durban Art Gallery will present a walkabout of Omar Badsha’s exhibition Imperial Ghetto on September 11 at 19h00.

Imperial Ghetto is a superb and evocative photographic diary of people and events encountered by Omar Badsha in the Grey Street area, taken between 1978 and 1986. The title is an ironic play on the fact that the network/labyrinth of streets were named after Queen Victoria and her family.

The walkabout will be given by Hassim Seedat who has had a legal practice in Durban since the 60’s and has played an active role in political activities. He has served on many committees including the Natal Indian Congress, ML Sultan Charitable and Educational Trust, Democratic Lawyers Association and GOPIO. He has contributed to various publications on Gandhi and has known Omar Badsha for many years. With his knowledge of the photographer’s work and the areas which he documents, Hassim Seedat’s talk promises to offer an interesting insight into the events behind the photographs.

Tickets R20 (R10 students and pensioners) include refreshments. A limited number of parking places are available in the City Hall Car Park. These will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis to those phoning with their car registration number in advance. Book tickets and/or parking through Rosemary on (031) 311-2268.
