ART AND RACISM (article first published : 2001-09-4)

The BAT Centre, the Durban Art Gallery and the Bayside Gallery are presenting a series of exhibitions to coincide with the World Conference Against Racism. The themes, artists and subject matter have all been chosen for their appropriate links to the objective of this major conference. All exhibitions run until September 9.

BAT Centre’s Democratic Gallery and Coffee Shop has Soutra, Images of Refugees which is a photographic exhibition by refugees from Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopa, Sudan, Somalia and the Comores. The pictures provide a unique insight into the lives, families and key issues facing refugees in South Africa. (The exhibition has been organised by the Rollback Xenophobia organisation)

The Menzi Mcunu Gallery at the BAT Centre has HIV/AIDS, the Billboard and Print Portfolio project of the artist for Human Rights. The project facilitates the contributions of artists to break the silence around HIV/AIDS in South Africa and through an international network with other artists. At least 37 artists – 27 South African and 10 internationally recognised artists - were invited to participate. A limited edition portfolio (30) of their signed prints is on sale to help raise funds for the project.

The Old Resource Centre at the BAT Cente will feature Art Poetry by Anita C Barthes which celebrates “love moulded by history dressed in different colours of difference – threaded with pain and celebration of a woman we have all met some time, some place.”
