BLUE CATERPILLAR EXPANDS (article first published : 2001-08-25)

The Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery at Butterflies for Africa has expanded with the opening of a new section. The two new rooms now allow for the hosting of solo exhibitions in one room whilst exhibiting a wide range of artists throughout the rest of the gallery. It is also envisaged that regular themed exhibitions will be held during the year focusing on emerging artists, photography, pottery etc.

The new gallery space also offers panoramic views over Pietermaritzburg and plans are underway to incorporate a wine bar. Visitors will find that the new venue has a fairly contemporary, minimalist feel which contrasts nicely with the rich, warm original gallery space.

Currently on exhibit at the Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery is a selection of originals and limited edition prints by Jeff Huntly. Jeff’s work is well known in Pietermaritzburg through his regular Veld Sketchbook column in the Natal Witness. His focus is on birds, landscapes, wildlife and historical subject matter and his style both detailed and distinctive. Jeff is also well known for designing the current set of coins for Zimbabwe and for the design of two series of postage stamps.

Running concurrently with this exhibition is the work of some 25 other artists portraying a wide range of subjects and mediums including sculpture and pottery. Although the gallery is still new, the current expansion brings it one step closer to fulfilling its vision of being the premier venue for showcasing KZN artists. In celebration of this 10% discount is being offered on all artwork sold until September 14.

The Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery is situated around the corner from the Innoxa factory shop at 37 Willowton Road and forms part of the Butterflies for Africa complex. Opening hours are 09h30 to 16h30 on Tuesdays to Fridays (09h30 to 15h00 on Saturdays). On the first Friday of every month (September 7) the gallery remains open until 20h00. Mystery discounts of between 5 and 25% are offered on these evenings and complimentary wine and coffee is served.
