ITHUNGA ART (article first published : 2001-07-23)

KZN African artists are invited to submit work for the third iThunga Art Calendar Competition which carries four cash prizes of R1,000 each. The closing date for competition entries is July 30 but artists will have until August 30 to complete their submissions.

The theme of the exhibition is Umkhumbane A Peoplešs History and the four cash prizes will be awarded to paintings, drawings or prints that most effectively depict some aspect of the colourful social history of Cato Manor, originally known as Umkhumbane. The four winning works will be featured on the 2001 iThunga Fine Art Calendar.

The competition is open to all African artists living and working in KZN and is run by the iThunga Art Project in association with the Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) at the University of Natal and the Cato Manor Development Association (CMDA). All works submitted will be included in an exhibition to be held at a venue in Cato Manor in October 2001, hosted by the CMDA.

Artists retain the rights to their work and the work on exhibition will be on sale to the public. The CMDA has indicated that they will purchase several works to be hung permanently at Intuthuko Junction, the new Cato Manor community tourism complex being built in Cato Manor.

The competition will be judged by a panel comprised of representatives of Artworks Publishing (sponsors of the iThunga Art Project), CMDA, CCA and the Durban Art Gallery.

Entries are restricted to two per artist and works may not be smaller than A3 or larger than A1. Artists must confirm their participation in writing or telephonically by July 31 to Khwezi Gule (Project Co-ordinator) on (031) 303-6466 or fax: (031) 303-4493.
