SIPHIWE ZULU (article first published : 2001-07-9)

The NSA Galleries are to host recent works by Durban artist Siphiwe Zulu from July 10 to 28.

Since 1990, Siphiwe Zulu has steadily established himself as a painter of note in KZN. Growing up in adverse circumstances, he maintained a commitment to his development as an artist. Currently a mature student at the Technikon Natal, Zulu has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and was one of the first resident artists at the BAT Centre. This exhibition is his second solo exhibition.

His exposure to Impressionism by a former teacher shines through his recent work. Painting with brightly coloured dots and small marks over washes, Zulu builds up paintings with specific reference to the built environment, churches, ‘township scenes’, houses and streets. Another source of reference is traditional beadwork. Besides a formal resemblance to beading, these paintings also become codified and hold ‘messages’: of longing, hope and desire.

This exhibition received support from Durban Metro.
