GREG SCHULTZ (article first published : 2001-07-5)

East London artist Greg Schultz is currently appearing at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. His exhibition is on at the Albany Museum, tucked away in the top floor gallery, an area which provides a good sense of space and light for his landscape works.

In his recent paintings, Greg Schultz has broken with tradition and searched for a closer link with nature. He has taken natural materials and placed them in geometrical and sacred shapes. Paintings are surrounded by spikes, representing the guardians of the landscape, their thorns a natural armament.

His casing or framing of the works is what makes this exhibition most fascinating. There is a series of small paintings placed within larger structures which deal with ebb and flow. One painting is encased in two long strips of wood, almost like the early prototype of an aeroplane.

The estuaries of the South Eastern Cape are ecologically sensitive and Greg Schultz has chosen to depict a multitude of flora and fauna. A particularly impressive work is that of an aloe arising from a burning dusty landscape, supported as it were by a banner by long poles on either side protected by the ever-present and distinctive spikes.
