ROUTES (article first published : 2001-06-20)

In her exhibition Routes opening at the Tatham West Gallery on June 21, the artist Liesbeth Groenewald explores the roads or routes travelled in the rural area where she lives.

“Tarmac, concrete or rough earth, roads carry us from where we have been to where we are going,” she says. “A passage from past to future. Life's path. A sense of direction. A road-route with decisions to be made at each fork along the way. There are road signs to point the way, but on life's high-way (or low-way) are they correct, complete or even understandable? Therefore a lot of black and white is used. The positive and the negative; science versus religion; order against chaos, good and evil.

“The road signs used speak of repetition, direction and keeping to the "rules of the road". The cross-roads tell of the many choices we all face in South Africa, but also of the cross-fertilisation of culture; the cross drawn to cast a vote; graves; the meeting of opposites.”

Some of the works are two-sided, presenting the viewer with a choice: a sense of seeing the "other side" and hopefully becoming enriched by the experience.

Taking her inspiration from the words of Einstein: "imagination is far more valuable than knowledge", Liesbeth attempts to portray her environment as she perceives it in reality and in her imagination.

The exhibition closes on July 22.
