WORKING WOMEN (article first published : 2001-05-23)

Working Women is the collective effort of a number of photographers whose images were collated by photographer Rafs Mayet for an exhibition which is running at Kwa Muhle Museum until June 15.

The motivation for the collection was to highlight the different work that women engage in, in both the formal and informal sectors. It also focuses on the nature and range of work such as the “unpaid” work of a woman occupied with housework and child rearing. One of the conclusions reached is that women are the most exploited of the working class but they are nevertheless always located at the forefront of the struggle for basic human rights, like access to water, education, housing, health care, better wages.
