DURBAN AT WORK (article first published : 2001-04-21)

Opening on April 27 at the Kwa Muhle Museum will be an impressive collection of paintings and an installation by young Durban artist Sharlene Khan which forms part of Kwa Muhle Museum's Workers' Day celebrations. The collection, entitled Durban at Work depicts life and work on the streets of the city and reflect the vibrancy, colour, energy and challenge of street trade.

Well-known artist Andrew Verster says of the collection: “Sharlene Khan takes the most ordinary of things and turns them into poetry. In doing this she opens our eyes. With her paintings as a guide, a walk through Durban's unglamorous streets becomes an experience. She makes us notice people and incident, landscape and pattern which we otherwise might miss. Generalisations do not interest her. It is the specifics which matter. Most importantly she loves what she sees and this gives her works strength.

The exhibition is expected to run until mid-June. More details from Lorelle Royeppen on e-mail loreller@crsu.duban.gov.za
