JABULISA EXHIBITION (article first published : 2001-04-21)

Jabulisa 2000, presented by the Natal Arts Trust, runs at the Durban Art Gallery until May 20 following its showing at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. Thereafter, it will go on a national tour including three other museums in this province.

The exhibition was co-curated by Brendan Bell of the Tatham Art Gallery and Jill Addleson of the Durban Art Gallery who spent a year selecting works from preliminary exhibitions and visiting fine arts institutions and artists' studios throughout KZN to choose the very best art from established as well as unknown young artists.

Jabulisa 2000 highlights the work of 134 KZN artists. Works range in media from paper and oil painting to fibre and clay. The decorative arts are particularly impressive and include ceramics by artists working in the indigenous tradition shown alongside those created by artists who trained in fine arts institutions. In the jewellery section, some of the artists have produced works like miniature sculptures fusing the western tradition of jewellery making with a strong input from the indigenous KZN tradition of working with rubber tyres.

Among the splendid fibre works is a poignant small embroidery by an artist who has portrayed her vision of paradise in her work, created just before she died of AIDS. A sculptor from the Newcastle area has carved a spectacular portrait of one of the soldiers who fought in one of the Anglo-Boer wars of the early 20th century. Every detail is correct, down to the regiment in which he served.

Jabulisa 2000 is an exhibition which offers something for everyone but mostly it celebrates the wonderful works of art created by artists of an entire province.
